Breast oppressed women, caught in a breast obsessed society
On the catwalk we accept the female breast as a fashion accessory, yet this much public exposure by a real American woman would be grounds for arrest in most areas.
Mixed message?
You bet it is. We're telling women that supermodel bodies are acceptable, but more average bodies are not. This message is unfair, and unhealthy, and genuinely insulting.
To see just how prevalent this message is in America you needn't look any farther than the magazine rack at your local grocery store. While society looks up to these models in their low-cut bra-less attire, it looks down on other women who would dare wear such breast revealing outfits in public. This is an unacceptable double standard.
A healthy message to women from these photos could be: Your breasts are natural. They are part of you. We need not cover them, apologize for them, nor be ashamed of them.
However, through our laws, America's message to women continues: In public, your breasts are obscene, lewd, and need to be controlled, even more stringently than guns in our country. Even though we encourage freedom of expression to the point that song lyrics depicting the beating, and raping of women are deemed art, and rewarded with Grammy nominations, women who would dare remove their tops in public are deemed deviant criminals, and rewarded with citations, fines, and even arrest.
